iPhone headphones

November 28th, 2008

I want some headphones that:
- sound OK
- fit like my Sennheiser CX-30s
- have the button/microphone thing like my pack-in Apple headphones
- aren’t outrageously expensive, say, £30 or so

Why do these not seem to exist? CX30s are widely available for £15 so it’s not impossible to meet these price points. I don’t believe in spending any more on out-and-about headphones, as they are likely to get damaged or lost. Plus, there’s not much point in buying high-end headphones for use on a train. For that reason I also prefer canalphones for noise isolation and portability (I find in-ear headphones very uncomfortable, whereas canalphones are fine).

Why don’t these seem to exist? Ultimate Buds UB3 look like they’d fit the bill but I can’t find a UK stockist. I’m on the verge of chopping up my Apple headphones and grafting Sennheiser drivers on. Bah. Bah, I say!

    Buy these: http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=6138

My Dad has the Grado SR60 http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=1021 which sound great. Paid about £40 for them shipped from the States when $-£ was more like 2-1.

The driver is the same in the iGrado but they are more portable and aren’t open. No button but who gives a shit about that?

    Where’s my fucking comment?! Grr…

Buy these: http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=6138 for reasons I outlined earlier in a comment that vanished.

    Oh look there it is….

    *slopes off sheepishly*

And they are open. Well, ok. Anyone else have an opinion? Or shall I continue to generate opinion until someone else arrives?

Yeah open isn’t much use for the train. Well, it won’t be good for my fellow passengers, anyway. Plus I really think I want earbuds, because they’re a lot easier to put in your pocket.

The button is actually awesome! In addition to being the mic for the hands free, and answering/hanging up calls, it can play/pause music (with a single click) and advance to the next track (double click). As the iPhone is touchscreen, doing these things without the button involves taking it out of my pocket, turning it on, unlocking it, then jabbing at the buttons on the UI — and none of that can be done with gloves on. Having used the pack-in Apple headphones for a few weeks I don’t want to give that up.

Apple do such a thing now, but it doesn’t meet your price point:

And they come in a pretty white box :-)
