Installing TomTom on the Binatone X350 satnav

January 20th, 2009

Are you a fan of neither getting lost nor spending money? Then read on!

The Binatone X350 is available from Asda for £50, or perhaps even £25 as they seem to be on a clearance (they were still £50 in Asda Cwmbran where mine came from). They are £58 from Amazon. Damned cheap, I hope you will agree. First off, I must admit it isn’t perfect:

  • battery life is average at a few hours or so; be prepared to use the (included) car charger. It might improve after a few charge cycles I suppose.
  • GPS signal strength is also mediocre, notably weaker than my SiRFStar III unit. It couldn’t get a signal when charging in the passenger footwell of my car, whereas my SiRFStar will work indoors, which isn’t supposed to be possible.
  • Probably because of the signal strength, it takes quite a long time (five minutes or so) between bootup and lock-on.

These are only really niggles though, and in light of the price point I don’t think they really matter. The biggest problem is that the included software isn’t very good, but it’s trivially easy to install TomTom on it instead thanks to the good guys at Binatone. It turns out that if an SD card is inserted, and that SD Card has a folder called MobileNavigator containing a file called MobileNavigator.exe, the Binatone GPS will (at boot time) load that EXE in place of the one built in to the unit.

Step-by-step instructions to get TomTom running are below. You’ll need an SD card of at least 512Mb capacity.

  1. Format SD card to FAT16 — first time I did this with the card formatted to FAT32, it didn’t work, and I think this helps. You’ll need about 280Mb of space
  2. Download the file from this site (they have BitTorrent or HTTP downloads) and extract it onto your hard disk.
  3. Copy the contents of the zip file onto the SD card
  4. Rename the TomTom directory to “MobileNavigator”
  5. Delete “navigator.exe”
  6. Rename “navigator_unchanged.exe” to “MobileNavigator.exe”
  7. Insert the SD card in your device and power it off and on with the small switch on the back. Select Navigation and you should see TomTom load
  8. During the install process, it will ask what sort of Bluetooth receiver you have. Select “Other NMEA Receiver, set the baud rate to maximum (115,200), and select COM7
  9. That’s it!

I am informed these instructions also work for the Navigo satnavs, which are available cheaply from a number of online retailers. If you need further help, you’re best off posting in The PC Tailor forums.

I also have this link for a download for TomTom 7 which I haven’t tried yet. The file has a set of instructions with it that look somewhat more involved, but the maps for TomTom v6 are no longer updated so v7 is probably preferable.

(Note that although the instructions mention the Navigo GPS unit, the Binatone device works the same way. The instructions should work just the same.)

Put Miopocket 4.0 on my new Binatone B430. That turned it into a pda. Then put iGo Primo on it. Works a treat after minor tweaks to 1 file using settings found here. All info on gpsunderground.

    heeyyyy guys…

ive just put everything inside my binatone, but failed on last round-to let it work.

everithing done. 2gb format on 16fat. tt/maps cracked. .dll inside. it must work.
    BUT.
when turn on my binatone navigation-TT opens and THEN it says-Not enough memory.

maybe RAM is too small? :D probably 64mb or less. how much TTs Have?
whithout .dll file TT opens whell, but dont find maps, like it should be.

    so The question:

    is that .dll file sucks?
my binatone sucks couse small memory(ram)?
    i suck, couse failed elsewhere?
other files (maps or other stuff) sucks?

maybe some1 could solve this problem for me.

ill try out 3rd chance for miopocket with maps. :)

“MobileNavigator containing a file called MobileNavigator.exe, the Binatone GPS will (at boot time) load that EXE in place of the one built in to the unit.Binatone”

B480 For this to work you must use caps (the file when down loaded does not use caps for the M and the N)
    MobileNavigator.
    NOT
    mobilenavigator.
Simply re name and off you go

Well, I’ve got a Binatone B350 (or maybe a B351 according to the sticker on the back!).
I think its GPS stuff is pretty good for the price but (being something of a geek), I wanted to see what it could really do so I followed some of the posts on here. Most are not too good and only give partial information (and seem to be focussed on the X350 which may be different?), so lets start from basics for the B350…
It runs MicroSoft CE V 6.0…
    1. That means it’s not Linux, Unix etc. so it’s not case sensitive for filenames (e.g. MobileNavigator is the same as mobilenavigator).
    2. Most of the Windows folder is in ROM so you can’t change the files there.
    3. The SD card slot should be capable of seeing FAT16, FAT 32, NTFS up to at least 2 GB – haven’t properly researched this so don’t know the limits. However, the SD card provides really good expansion and the ability to incorporate almost any appropriate applications.
    4. What aplications run is determined by a registry setting – it is very easy to change with the right tools and the tools are available for freeware download. If you want, you can change this device into a normal Widows CE device and run any CE application on it (subject to free memory constraints and screen resolution). It’s through the resistry setting that you can determine what runs at boot up time.
    5. If there is enough interest I’m happy to put full details (not like some of the partial information I’ve seen so far) of how to change the little monster to do what you want (subject ot memory and screen resolution). I won’t help with illegal TomTom downloads though but you’ll have enough information to be able to run this if you can get hold of the TomTom software from somewhere!
    6. I’ll wait for the “interest” as, if there isn’t any, I’ll not waste time on this!!

    Hi,
Binatone X350, successfully installed TT6, but maps not found error. downloaded the note_prj.dll and copied into MobileNavigator folder, but still no maps found.

I have read all 6 pages on here, hence I installed TT6, but havent seen a solution to this? Can anyone please help? I have copied TT6 onto X350 rather than run off SD card.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I have used the advice in the quote below to add TT functionality to the 2GB micro SD card in my T350.

Prior to installing the maps I have seen the TT program running when executed from win CE in the sat nav.

However after downloading the maps mentioned in the quote and entering my unit ID from ttnavigator.bif into DeviceID.txt and running RunMeForDCT.bat, copy maps and “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland-22.meta.dct” to SD card, I now get “TomTom Navigator Unable to start, Not enough memory is available” error when running TT.

    Any ideas?
I get the error if starting from a shortcut or from the exe.
In win CE control panel / system I have moved the slider fully to the left.
And I have copied the file “note_prj.dll” into the “MobileNavigator” folder on the SD Card.

    I’m almost there please help…

    thanks
    Mark

You map is now activated/has a license.Copy the whole maps folder “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland” (containg a bunch of files like the .pna, the .meta and the newly created .dct) into the root of the SD Card. I.e., when browsing your SD Card, you’ll see two folders in the root:MobileNavigatorandUnited_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_IrelandNext, download a file called note_prj.dllLink: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WARME7D6This will make TT look for the maps on the SD Card. Without this, it will never find the maps!Copy the file note_prj.dll into the MobileNavigator folder on the SD Card.Start it up and Bobs your uncle!

    @toob
Hi, I have a binatone GPS and had tomtom 6 working no probs, struggled with tomtom 7 as maps not found, is now working, I did three things but not sure which it was that did it, either try them all or one at a time if you can be bothered -

1 – re-did the ttmeta file crack thingy, when its done and you have the three files (meta, pna & dct) to copy back to the map folder, make sure they all end in “-22″ as two files did and one didn’t on mine (ie – United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland-22.*** not United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland.***)

2 – rename the actual map folder on the SD card from “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland”
    to
    “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_815_2024″
which is the actual tomtom map name as listed in the meta.txt file

3 – I think this is probably the one that made is work, put the note_prj.dll file in the root of the sd card rather than (or as well as) in the MobileNavigator folder.

It all works fine now. I also copied “explorer.exe” from my pc’s Windows directory to the root of the SD card and the unit now boots up into windows rather than launching straight into the Sat nav software. I have tomtom 6 in one folder and tomtom 7 in another folder so I can just choose which one to load, the advantage of this is my tomtom6 map has all the speed camera locations on where as I haven’t figured out how to get them onto my tomtom 7 map yet so I just decide which to use depending on how fast I feel like driving ;-)

Hope this helps someone out there, I know I spent a fair bit of time being frustrated with it!

Anyone know how to get the speed camera locations on the v7 map?

Hi, I’ve been trying to format an SD card to FAT16. The only option I get is FAT 32. How do I find FAT16?

  14. Ken
    June 27th, 2011 at 23:35 | #14

My card wouldn’t format to FAT16 default in Windows 7 but it worked just fine with FAT32. TomTom didn’t load up at first but my B350 is not wide screen so I got rid of navigator.exe (which is for the wide screen) and renamed “navigator_unchanged.exe” to “MobileNavigator.exe” like it tells you to in the instructions.
TomTom then loaded up as soon as I tapped the navigate button. I’m really pleased because it’s 500 hundred per cent better than the unhelpful and buggy Binatone software.

    Also works for Binatone T350.

Could not get it to work with the SD card, so, instead:

Connected the unit to my PC using USB cables,
Navigated to the ‘flash’ drive on the unit (go to My Computer->Mobile Device).
Deleted everything there (backed it up on my PC first!).
Copied the Tomtom software to the flash directory.
Started the unit, selected ‘Navigation’ and Tomtom worked.

    Hello… I’m from Germany…
I just got a Binatone x350 as Replacement from a friend who crushed my old Nav. I did a very little research on updating the Map material and it doesn’t seem like there aren’t any map updates for Germany. Fortunately i landed on this website… I just wanted to ask if there is any easy term i should search for to find the linked file for Germany?
sorry for bothering but i seemingly can’t manage to find what I’m searching for expect by accident =/

I am in possession of a Binatone X350 Sat Nav. It’s worked perfectly until now. When I switch it on all I get is “Binatone” and will not move from this setting. It MAY need Calibrating and if so can I do it myself and how is it done because when I plug it into my computer it states that the device is not reogognised. What if anything can I do to get it working properly again?

    TT6 work fine, just outdated.

TT7 installed correctly – asked for map.

Map activated via Fast Activate with correct meta and DeviceID from ttnavigator.bif.

No map found if not using note_prj.dll, so assume this is now correct….but….

TT7 out of memory on launch from ‘Navigation’. Running on Binatone T350 direct from flash. Currently trying on SD.

I’ve installed the GPS tools (which allow you to have multiple apps etc) and then installed v7.9, installed the UK map (mentioned above), loads the map up ok but almost instantly crashes out with “Not enough memory”…..I just don’t think it’s possible to run it….

I have recently tried this for my x350 2nd edition. The step by step guide is correct aside from missing the Shell ini file in the root folder. This can be copied from the binatone card and placed on your tt card. It won’t work without the shell file.
