Installing TomTom on the Binatone X350 satnav

January 20th, 2009

Are you a fan of neither getting lost nor spending money? Then read on!

The Binatone X350 is available from Asda for £50, or perhaps even £25 as they seem to be on a clearance (they were still £50 in Asda Cwmbran where mine came from). They are £58 from Amazon. Damned cheap, I hope you will agree. First off, I must admit it isn’t perfect:

  • battery life is average at a few hours or so; be prepared to use the (included) car charger. It might improve after a few charge cycles I suppose.
  • GPS signal strength is also mediocre, notably weaker than my SiRFStar III unit. It couldn’t get a signal when charging in the passenger footwell of my car, whereas my SiRFStar will work indoors, which isn’t supposed to be possible.
  • Probably because of the signal strength, it takes quite a long time (five minutes or so) between bootup and lock-on.

These are only really niggles though, and in light of the price point I don’t think they really matter. The biggest problem is that the included software isn’t very good, but it’s trivially easy to install TomTom on it instead thanks to the good guys at Binatone. It turns out that if an SD card is inserted, and that SD Card has a folder called MobileNavigator containing a file called MobileNavigator.exe, the Binatone GPS will (at boot time) load that EXE in place of the one built in to the unit.

Step-by-step instructions to get TomTom running are below. You’ll need an SD card of at least 512Mb capacity.

  1. Format SD card to FAT16 — first time I did this with the card formatted to FAT32, it didn’t work, and I think this helps. You’ll need about 280Mb of space
  2. Download the file from this site (they have BitTorrent or HTTP downloads) and extract it onto your hard disk.
  3. Copy the contents of the zip file onto the SD card
  4. Rename the TomTom directory to “MobileNavigator”
  5. Delete “navigator.exe”
  6. Rename “navigator_unchanged.exe” to “MobileNavigator.exe”
  7. Insert the SD card in your device and power it off and on with the small switch on the back. Select Navigation and you should see TomTom load
  8. During the install process, it will ask what sort of Bluetooth receiver you have. Select “Other NMEA Receiver, set the baud rate to maximum (115,200), and select COM7
  9. That’s it!

I am informed these instructions also work for the Navigo satnavs, which are available cheaply from a number of online retailers. If you need further help, you’re best off posting in The PC Tailor forums.

I also have this link for a download for TomTom 7 which I haven’t tried yet. The file has a set of instructions with it that look somewhat more involved, but the maps for TomTom v6 are no longer updated so v7 is probably preferable.

(Note that although the instructions mention the Navigo GPS unit, the Binatone device works the same way. The instructions should work just the same.)

Hi.I’ve tried to follow the above. Couple of qustions though. I’ve downloaded tt7 from the above link and whilst the sat nav opens tom tom it says there’s no map to view. Also it can’t find iexplorer. Also in the instructions it says delete navigator.exe. Where do i find this? I have found navigator.cfg. Is this the same thing? I tried to load from the first link but had no joy with that it wouldn’t open at all. Help please

    May 7th, 2009 at 08:39 | #8

well ive just looked on pctailor site and all boxes are there, i can also verify that ths works as does the latest maps etc for tomtom and route66, register and download them, if not search google, google can be everybodys friend if needed, but to comment that it is too complicated when all it is basically is copy and paste then if i were you i wouldnt try it if you find it complicated!!

    @nadir

Make sure you put the file explorer.exe on the sd card as well. If you have done this, you should see a desktop open up, not the usual screen. If your looking for explorer.exe, you can copy and paste it from your pc.

Rather than trying to follow the installation instructions blindly, it might help if you understood a little about how this all works.

I am no expert on this, but as I understand it this is what is happening.

When you turn the sat nav on it starts to look for a program to run

ie it looks in location “a” for a program to run

if its not there it looks in location “b” for the program,

and then in location “c” etc until it finds one

What you are trying to do is to fool the sat nav into finding the program you want it to find, instead of the one that has been preinstalled

One way of doing this is to rename your program to the same name as the preinstalled program, and then placing it in the first location that the sat nav tries to look for a program to run.
When you do this it finds your program first and it runs it, instead of the preinstalled program

This is the method you are using when you change the file names to MobileNavigator.exe etc

Another method is instead of letting the sat nav look for the progam to run by itself,is to tell it where to look.
You can do this using a file called Shell.ini
Basically the shell.ini file is a small text file with the path to the program you want to run in it.

for example if you put route 66 onto your sd card
you would find the program route66n7.exe in a folder called r66 which itself was in a folder called r66 which was on the sd card which is called SDMMC.

if you wanted the computer to find this program you tell it where to find it by typing the followin path

    \SDMMC\r66\r66\route66n7.exe

into a text editor like note pad and the saving it with the name shell.ini

if you copy this file onto the sd card, the sat nav will look in this file first for instructions as to where to find a program to run

And yet another method is instead of letting the computer look for a program to run, you look for yourself it instead.
To do this you need to copy the program explorer.exe to your sd card.
You can find a copy of explorer.exe in the windows folder of your computer.
It is the program you use to explore your P.C
Now when you turn your computer on you will get a Windows type interface, and you will be able to browse to your software and click on it to run it.

mmmm, very strange Ian, u obviously have a different software version to me, i have 8 icons in that menu, only other thing i can suggest is search around the various menus and see if u can find it, poss even try to update the binatone software, see if it that does it.

you dont need to find the memory source all i did was put everything onto my sd card put it in the sat nav switch it on on you should get about 6 options just double click the one that says SSMD then you will get the option to load the tom tom

Cannot get tomtom to work on Binatone x350 2nd edition. When I click Nagigation, it gives the TomTom splash screen but then goes back to the Navigation option.

Please can anyone suggest how to fix?

    June 6th, 2009 at 18:17 | #33

I think that the tomtom is running, but in the background. or minimized somehow. After the splash screen dissapears, it goes back to the screen showing navigation and menu. Tried 6 different versions of 6 and 7 so far and each time the splash screen comes up an then vanishes.

Please can anyone shed any light on whats happening here?

I had that problem too, I kept deleting files made at start up in the built in flash and restarting until it worked. After it worked once the screen showed again when I switched it on but I just used the reset button on the back and it works after reload each time.

Mate, such great thanks for this. I had my TomTom stolen and could only afford to replace it with a cheaper Binatone unit. I now have the functionality of a £200-odd quid TomTom :o ) Happy days!

The only thing that seemed different to your instructions was that the ‘TomTom’ directory was already named MobileNavigator, when I opened it there was an .exe already called ‘mobilenavigator’ so I deleted this and renamed the navigator_unmodified.exe accordingly.

Plugged it in and it worked straight away!!!

    Appreciated!!!

Bloody hell, there are some retarded people here. “Oh I’ve done everything right but it doesn’t work!” “apart from the file x and y! Jesus!!! Oh It’s so complicated when i have to right click and copy, by the way how do you right click? and where is copy? Proper retardation. If you cant do it, just give it to someone that can or buy a tomtom!!! Some people have got some people dont have it, Some of the people on here clearly dont. Give it a rest and stop asking stupid questions, search with google and stop wasting other people that did and learned by reading and reading, lazy knoobs!

@D and others having problem of “splash screen disappears, it goes back to the screen showing navigation and menu”

I had this as well and solved it by foloowing the advice of copying explorer.exe from my pc onto the root of the SD card. Windows explorer opens instead of the normal binatone software and you can then navigate to MobileNavigator.exe and start the TT software completely independently :-)

HAl – I had the same problem with the splash screen, but having the explorer app in the root of the SD card does not work for me. When Explorer opens, I browse to the MobileNavigator directory, and double click the exe, and again, I get the splash screen for a second, but it is then replaced by the explorer interface.

Very frustrating. I am going to flush it down the toilet now. For info, mine is 2nd edition, and has the six settings buttons (not 8).

  46. Mark
    July 31st, 2009 at 08:44 | #46

PS – have tried closing down Explorer once opening the tomtom exe but the whole thing freezes up. I think it has a clockwork processor.

BTW, I also tried copying the tomtom software to flash, to replace the Binatone software – however that did not work either. The TomTom splash screen is always replaced by the Binatone one, with the 2 buttons (Navigation and Menu).

Drive Like A Local my arse. The locals must be pretty dumb.

for what its worth heres my two penneth worth.
I loaded this up and intermittantly it would work.
I.e sometimes i would get the tomtom flash screen then nothing.
So i did as the others sugested copied explorer.exe on to the sd card.
didnt work the first time so i deleted it coppied it again and so far works everytime.
For those people struggling make sure you do everything as the first instructions say and it will work
